Using polystyrene type macroporous cation-exchange resin D72 as the precursor, the high intensity globular carbonized resin was manufactured by the method of high temperature carbonization and water vapor activation. Carbonized resin supported 12-phosphotungstic acid (HPW) catalyst was synthesized through dipping process. Their composition, structure and physico-chemical character were detected by BET, IR, SEM, XRD and solvent dissolve methods. The catalytic activity was checked by using synthesis of alkylphenol as the mold reaction. It has been found that carbonized resin is a kind of carrier with stable structure, homogeneous pore diameter, high specific surface area and plenty of oxygen-containing active sites on the surface. HPW can be dispersed in monomolecular layer and linked with oxygen-containing active sites on the surface of the carrier. Carbonized resin supported HPW catalyst is a kind of solid acid catalyst that has high intensity, stable composition, satisfactory activity and high selectivity.
