Objective To observe the preventive and therapeutic effect of spleen-invigorating and superficies-consolidating therapy for children recurrent respiratory tract infection ( RRTI ). Methods Sixty RRTI children were equally divided into two groups by simple randomization: the treatment group received Fugan Ning Prescription (FNP, mainly composed of Radix seu Folium Ipomoeae Cairicae, Radix Pseudostellariae, Poria, Carpophorum Hericii Erinacei, Radix Pentapanax leschenauhia, Semen Coisis, Endothelium Corneum Gigeriae Galli and Radix Glycyrrhizac ), and the control group received bifid tripleviable. Twelve weeks constituted one treatment course, and a 6-month follow-up was carried out. The therapeutic effect was evaluated and the changes of main symptoms scores were observed. Results The effect on relieving symptoms of deficiency of lung and spleen in the treatment group was superior to that in the control group (P 〈0. 01 ), and the total effective rate on reducing attack frequency and severity of RRTI was 90% in the treatment group and 60% in the control group (P 〈 0. 05 ). Conclusion Spleen-invigorating and superficies-consolidating therapy is effective for the prevention and treatment of children recurrent respiratory tract infection through relieving the symptoms of deficiency of lung and spleen, shortening disease course, and reducing attack frequency and severity of RRTI.
