In sociology of religion, Max Weber explored the anomic thought of non -western religious doctrines. Through the interpretation of Hinduism, Weber defined anomie as the absence of ultimate ethical values and highlighted its significance in a cross - cultural context. This paper compares Weber's notion of anomie with current evaluations of anomie and discusses a typology of the term. By making the comparison between oriental religion and western religion, this paper also clarifies the relevant characteristics of anomie in the West - the total absence of institutional norms and of cultural values is impossible in society. Weber's anomic thought expands contemporary theory of anomie and opens a wide vision of this field.
