"Death of the Author" advanced by Roland Barthes is an outcome of the linguistic turn in the 20th century. It aims to oppose the human-centered rationalism in the 19th century. Although Susan Sontag wasn't directly involved in the discussion about the role of the author, she echoed with Barthes in her two early novels in 1960's, The Benefactor and Death Kit. By analyzing these two novels through the concept of "death of the author", uncertain narration and open ending, we can get an understanding of Sontag's view on the role of the author.
