The article examines the impacts of Joan Scott's article,'Gender,a Useful Category of Historical Analysis' on Chinese historiography in the PRC and Euro-American scholarship. It traces out two distinct but entangled contemporary scholarly formations in which gender as an analytical category has developed. In the English academy Scott's article marked an important conceptual turn that moved scholarly inquiries in the China studies beyond women to gender and beyond a male-female binary to a broader inquiry into relationships of power.Scott's suggestions about the importance of culturally available symbols, normative concepts, politics and social institutions, and subjective identity have stimulated the production of the most influential new scholarship in Chinese history written in English.Although 'nan/nü',an important component part in Confucian ethics for social organization, had been written about extensively by literati in history, contemporary Chinese historians' attention to gender theory and gender analysis did not emerge until very recently. In China's Mainland, gender history is at the beginning stage of an emerging field.
