With the aid of analysis data, the bottom sediments of urban district region of the Suzhou River in Shanghai were mainly consist of fine sand and silt. The contents of heavy metals such as Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn are more greatly than the background level of Shanghai agricultural soils, and JENSEN pollution evaluation value for sediments. Positive correlations evidently exist between Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd. The ratio of Zn and Cd is variable from 420 to 880.Test results show that the pH value of aquatic phase affects the release of heavy metals remarkably, while the temperature of aquatic phase and the time of bottom sediments exchange with overlying waters make little contribution to it. The order of release capability of heavy metals is Zn>Cd>Pb.As a result of the turbulance of mixing bottom sediments with overlying waters, certain heavy metals are released in significant amounts from bottom sediments, and changes in overlying water quality would be inferior.
