Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O' Dell is known as the female version of Robinson Crusoe. This paper attempts to reread this children's classic with the guidance of literary ethical criticism in order to uncover the various ethics displayed in tile novel. As to the relationship between man and society, the novel discloses the obstacles that patriarchal society has set up for women. Concerning the relationship between man and others, the novel expresses the ethics of care which is characteristic of tolerance and beneficence. As regards to the relationship between man and nature, the novel extols the ideal ethics of a harmonious whole. Through the exploration of the themes of equality between men and women as well as of deep ecological ethics, Island of the Blue Dolphins displays the author's stunning foresight and his emphasis on moral education.
