The mechanism of the influence of oxygen content on methanol deep oxidation over Pd/ γ Al 2O 3 has been studied by the techniques of in situ XRD and XPS. It was found that when palladium exists in reductive state on the support, the methanol oxidation activity and deep oxidation selectivity increase with increasing oxygen content. The activity and selectivity decrease when the amount of oxygen increases to an extent that results in palladium transfer from reduction state to oxidation state, it is the reason that the phenomenon of oxygen inhibition arises. Methanol is easier to be oxidized to formaldehyde over Pd O.
