The present paper deals with the major phytocoenological features of the dovetree community of Mt. Seven-sister in western Hubei and its protection strategies, and comes to the following conclusions;1) Ecological conditions of Mt. Seven-sister are good for the growth and development of dovetree and its community.2) The community possesses specified floristic composition and is dominated by the North-temperat(?) (?)l(?)ent and the East-Asian element3) Evergreen and deciduous phanerophytes, especially, the deciduous, play the most important role in the community, and the community belongs to montane mixed evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved forest in the subtropical zone.4) The community has marked stratification with three layers, i. e. tree layer (10-2Sm in height), shrub layer(0.5-5m in height)and herb layer with 80-95% of the total coverage.5) The stage structure of dovetree population is an increasing type or a stable type and in dynamic equilibrium as surrounding conditions change.6) The pattern of the dovetree population is contagious, and this kind of aggregation is determined by internal factors intrinsic to dovetree and environmental ones.7) The communty is basically stable but the random. smalt changes in plant numbers, in plant size or age, in community biomass, in the abundance of species or even in the flora may merely result in fluctuation, maturation of the stand or the combination of fluctuation and maturation.8) In oder to protect dovctree gene bank, the following measures should be taken:a)prohibiting the felling of dovetree individuals; b) setting up natural reserve;c) planting man-made dovetree community; d) doing scientific research on its biology and ecology and e) reiniorcing education and propaganda.
