Since the commencement of construction of Hsuehshan pilot tube in 1991, groundwater problem encountered during construction kept obsessing all working staff. To further understand the groundwater condition during operation and evaluate the impact on environments, the engineers have kept monitoring and analyzing the groundwater condition of Hsuehshan Tunnel project ( including two main tubes and one pilot tube ) in an attempt not only to ensure the structural safety itself hut also to clarify the impact on surrounding environments and to mitigate the doubts of the public. In this article, the process of establishment for the whole groundwater monitoring system of Hsuehshan Tunnel is introduced. Then, specifications, functions and allocation of relevant equipment are also illustrated. Monitoring data collected so far are sorted, analyzed and interpreted. From the viewpoint of tunnel design, interaction between tunnel safety and groundwater and its relationship with surrounding settings will be discussed. Finally, the trend concluded up to now will he mentioned and herewith the possible variation could be estimated in order to ensure sustainable operation for Hsuehshan Tunnel.
