Seismic poundings between adjacent structures have been frequently observed during past major earthquakes. In this study, two reduced-scale steel models are built and tested on a MTS shaking table to investigate the potential seismic poundings between two 21-story adjacent buildings in Hong Kong. It is found that poundings between the two models may be periodic, group periodic or chaotic, depending on separation distances, structural characteristics and ground shakings. Energy transferred through pounding may cause abnormal large responses and damages to the lighter and more flexible building, which when stands alone does not suffer any vibrational damages.
