Mongolian gerbils were used as animal models for transient cerebral ischemia to explore the potential mechanism of disorder in sexual function after acute cerebral ischemia. The animals were made to recirculate at 4 hours to 14 days following transient cerebral ischemia. The morphological changes of gonadotropic cells in the pituitary gland were observed by immunocy-tochemistry and electron microscopy. The results showed that remarkable changes in the density, staining activity and ultrastructure of gonadotropic cells accurred 4 hours after cerebral ischemia. Changes of gonadotropic cells were found to be reversible within 1~2 weeks during recirculation after five minutes of cerebral ischemia. Gonadotropic cells were seriously damaged and their function of synthesis and secretion was inhibited during recirculation after ten minutes of cerebral ischemia. The degree of damage was closely related to the time of ischemia. The damage of gonadotropic cells in the pituitary gland was important morphologic basis of changes in sexual function after ischemia.
