From the Late Qing dynasty through the Republic of China, peasants of Xunwu County in the border of Jiangxi, Fujian and Guangdong were confronted with the sweeping tidal waves of capitalism with China setting up trading ports and having trade relations with other countries. While following the tradition, their economic behavior and mentality involving employment, consumption, production management and their sense of market risks, took on a distinct capitalism-oriented tendency. The case study in Xunwu County shows that traditional Chinese peasantry, not destined to be the stumbling block when viewed from a long period and integral behavior reaction, can presumably grow to be "the brave fighter" in market economy and become adaptable to the Chinese modernization.
