贝弗利.法默的女权主义作家的身份一直受到争议。法默作品中女性角色的被动、弱小似乎与女权运动提倡的妇女解放格格不入,法默自己也不认为她的写作在宣扬女权主义观点。但法默小说中的女性角色不再是传统文学中的被观察的客体,而是观察的主体。法默以女性的视角来审视这个世界和男性,探索女性内心的情感,寻找女性的性别身份,反映女性受到的压迫。这种写作方式在女权意识蓬勃发展之前是不可能出现的,因此,法默的作品正是女权运动的成果的反映。
Beverley Farmer's position as a feminist writer has been argued all the time. It seems that the passivity and weakness of the female characters in Farmer's novels don't fit into the women's liberation advocated by the feminism, and Farmer herself denied that she meant to call for feminist values or points in her writing. However, the female characters in Farmer's novels are no longer objects to be observed as that in traditional literature, they are subjects to observe. Farmer adopts a female perspective to gaze at the world and the male, to explore the feelings inside the female body, to seek the female's gender identity, and to reveal the oppression on women. This mode of writing is not a possibility before the flourish of the feminism, so it can be regarded as a reflection of the achievement of the feminist movement.
