The Chinese term "yunhe (canal)" can be traced to The New Chronicles of the Tang Dynasty. It, however, was never used as a geographical term in ancient times. The canal for irrigation purposes appeared with the rise of agriculture. The development of Chinese canals started in southeast China as early as the Hemudu and Kuahuqiao period. According to the historical resources, there had already existed several canals in the pre-Qin period. Though China has a long history of canal development, the lessons drawn from historical experience are profound. The Huitong River, the last part of the Grand Canal, dug in Yuan Dynasty, is a typical example, which could not function after its completion.
