The Portrait of a Lady is the early masterpiece of Henry James in which he presents successfully the heroine Isabel Archer in accordance with the principle of psychological reality. The defects in Isabel＇s character partially account for her tragic fate. Due to such social roots as the confinements of social reality and conventions, her marriage tragedy in the end is only natural and comes without surprise.
