Hedda Gabler is one of Ibsen's most controversial plays. Since its publication in 1890, critics have never stopped arguing about what kind of woman Hedda is and why she kills herself. Rereading the play and the notes by Ibsen himself from the modem feminist perspective, we have got some new insights. Hedda is truly a poetic woman in pursuit of the meaning of life, which is the light hidden in Hedda. Her death is not arranged by fate or caused by her own tragic flaw. She chooses to die in order to realize her pursuit of a poetic life.
