From Jan, 1988 to Dec, 1993. We monitored consecutively the birth defect rate of 160018 perinatal infants in Beijing areas. The perinatal mortality rate (PMR) in everage was 9. 37%, the birth defect rate (BDR) in mean was 6. 88‰, Both of the rates decresed gradnally, Compared to the PMR (14.96‰) and the BDR (11.55‰) from Feb, 1986 to Jan 1988 in Beijing areas, the PMR and the BDR from Jan 1988 to Dec 1993 were singnificantly lower (P<0. 001). The factors such as minimum elements. Zn, Mn, Cu, Ca, contacting with harmful materials occupationally, and Video Display Terminal Operations have recently been considered as the related events to the birth defects. Some advanced techniques including color ultrasonographic diagnosis, nonevasive methods for prenatal diagnosis, FISH and PCR and so on have equiped medical workers with some newly powerful diagnostic means.
