I noticed him because the seat beside his was vacant. He sat in one comer of the crowded peak hour tram. About seventy, grey-grizzled beard, peaked cap pulled low and a zipped up woollen windcheater stained with spilled food. His battered backpack lay at his feet. I thought he was probably homeless.
