Based on first-hand materials, files and oral accounts, this paper investigates and analyses Maksimov’s teaching of oil painting in The Central Institute of Fine Arts from 1955 to 1957. The paper is divided into four sections. Section one gives some background information of the oil painting class taught by Maksimov and meanwhile points out the significance of re-establishing normal education of oil painting. Section two describes the process of inviting Maksimov over to China and answers the question of why inviting foreign experts over to China instead of sending students abroad. Section three focuses on the contents of teaching and the influences of the class based on first-hand documents. And section four discusses mainly the introduction of Soviet teaching of oil painting into China, its positive and negative impacts, and the historical attitude that we should take.
