Effect of low level acoustic stimulation,or 'conditioning' on the sensitivity to subsequent intensity noise exposure were studied in rats. The animals was conditioned with octave bandpass noise, centered at 4 kHz,of 55 to 95 dB SPL for ten hours before the traumatic exposure to the noise of the same nature but at 105 dB SPL and for 13 hours.Auditory brain stem response thresholds were measured before, immediately after and three weeks after the exposures. The results show that acoustic conditioning decreased both temporary and permanent threshold shift induced by the traumatic exposures, indicating there is a toughening of the rat's cochlea by the low level stimulation used in this study.Possible mechanism of the phenomenon was discussed.
