Based on 'The Six-Cities Public Opinion Survey in China,' which was conducted by the PEW Research Center for the People and the Press, as part of the second PEW Global Attitudes Project, this study tests in the Chinese context the validity of interdependence theory, i.e., economic interdependence will lead to positive attitudes toward economic internationalism within a society. Our findings indicate that a majority of Chinese urban residents had 'positive' attitudes toward economic internationalism. Meanwhile, our multiple regression (OLS) model indicates that in the six surveyed Chinese cities economic internationalism draws support mainly from subjective (in a relative sense) considerations of the public, such as feelings of cultural superiority, a sense of modernity, and life satisfaction. Some objective socio-demographic attributes (i.e., education, age, and contacts with overseas friends or relatives) help shape such support for economic internationalism.
