Two species of calcareous sponges are described in this paper. One is the type species of a new genus, Corynospongia tubuliforma gen. et sp. nov. found from the upper Lower Permian Maokou Formation, Hongqiao, Xingwen County, south Sichuan; the new genus, Corynospongia, is chracterized by the body wall with two types of canals. The other is a fragment of sponge body collected from the Lower Permian strata in Laibin of Guangxi; this form belongs to the order Heteractinida and is referred to Talpaspongia clavata King, 1943. Description of new genus and species Corynospongia gen. nov. Type species: Corynospongia tubuliforma gen. et sp. nov. Large branching tubular sponge with moderately thick body wall and relatively wide central cloaca; skeletal tracts thin and irregularly shaped; dermal layer essentially absent. Body wall penetrated by two types of canals; large canals straight or branching, commonly arranged in horizontal rows, linking up the central cloaca and the surface; while small ones arranged irregularly in the body wall, linking up the large canals, the central cloaca and the surface. Comparison: This genus differs from Coclocladia, Heliospongia and Corynella in having the body wall with large canals arranged in horizontal rows and small ones arranged irregularly. Distribution and age: South Sichuan; Lower Permian. Corynospongia tubuliforma gen. et sp. nov. (p1. Ⅰ, fig. 2) Large branching sponge, composed of tubular bodies with a diameter of 30—40 mm. Transverse sections of central cloaca and body circular; central cloaca 22—30 mm in diameter; body wall 5—7 mm in thickness, penetrated by a number of large and small canals. Large canals straight or branching, commontly arranged in horizontal rows linking up the central cloaca and the surface. Transverse sections of large canals circular, about 1 mm in diameter. Numerous small irregular canals about 0.1 mm in diameter, connecting large canals, central cloaca and surface. Skeletal tracts relatively thin and worm-shaped in section; type of spicules not observed; dermal layer essentially absent. Comparison: The most important feature of the species lies in the tubular sponge body, the large canals in horizontal rows and the small irregular ones in the body wall. Therefore, it is easy to distinguish the species of Coclocladia, Heliospongia and Corynella. Locality and horizon: Hongqiao, Xingwen County, south Sichuan; Maokou Formation, upper Lower Permian.
