Heroin addiction can be considered as a loss of control heroin taking, or compulsive heroin-seeking and taking despite horrendous consequences. Although it involves many psychological and social factors, it is widely accepted that heroin addiction is a central nervous system disorder of complicated mechanisms related to dopaminergic neurons and monoaminergic neurons. Genetic epidemiologic studies support a high degree of heritable vulnerability for heroin dependence and polymorphisms in the dopaminergic- related genes and monoaminergic-related genes appear to contribute to individual risk for addiction.
