A span of over 20 years has passed, and when I meet Zhou Long again now, he is already a full-time professor at the College of Music, Uni-versity of Missouri in Kansas, U.S.A., and also a world -renowned composer. His music has entered the mainstream society of the West. Being a Ph.D. in music from the University of Columbia and a professor of composition in an American university, Zhou Long has undoubtedly mastered the Western contemporary composing techniques since long ago. However, interestingly, the composer Zhou Long always appears as a Chinese composer, whether it was the time when he stayed in China earlier, or during his stay in the U.S. for over 20 years. And likewise, his works reflect so much the profound Chinese cultural background and the taste of the new ' Intellectuals' Music' that they leave on us deep impressions. Zhou Long has hardly written music for big events, nor has his music directly represented major historical incidents or his personal encounters. He seemed to prefer detached eyesight and steady manners in his attempt to better understand the Chinese civilization. In his view, the long -standing Chinese civilization is solemn, sublime and admirable. This is the very reason why he chose for himself a music -composing career with the inheritance and development of the Chinese civilization as the dominant line, even though he has settled down in the U.S. and has obtained American citizenship. In his own words, 'although I am American, I am still viewed by the American music critics as 'Chinese composer', which, to me, is more familiar. In fact, I have not changed myself. The Chinese traditions that we have are so deeply rooted that they can never be changed.'
