This paper places the "model workers" phenomenon in the "working units" of China in 1960s and 1970s in a sociological perspective. Model workers were set up as moral exampies and propagated for the purpose of moral education across society. This paper is focused on how such model workers were actually caught in the conflict between moral ideals and harsh realities, and how their symbolic functions served as enforced moral authority at the grass level.
