The Artistic Career of Mr. Cao Zheng's Guzheng Playing and His Achievements

摘要 曹正先生是我国现代著名的古筝演奏家,也是全面系统地传授专业古筝技术和理论的音乐教育家。古筝艺术在现代的蓬勃发展是与他一生“不遗余力、贯彻始终”的奋斗分不开的。从1947年第一个开独奏音乐会,到1948年将古筝带入高等音乐学府讲坛;从1950年东北鲁艺古筝专业的创建,到1984年中国第一个幼儿古筝班的开设;从理论研究,到教材建设,方方面面,他都是站在了古筝艺术阵地的最前沿。 Mr. Cao Zheng was a well-known Chinese Guzheng player in the modern times,and was also a music educator who taught comprehensively the professional Guzheng playing skills and theory. Thanks to his lifetime strife with ″endless efforts″,the art of Guzheng has developed rapidly in the present time. The fact that he was the first person to hold Guzheng recital in 1947,that he introduced Guzheng into curriculum of music universities in 1948,that he established the discipline of Guzheng in the Lu Xun Academy of Arts in Northeast China in 1950,and that he set up the first Guzheng class for children in 1984,all these made him the pioneering figure in the field of Guzheng art. In 1935,he started to learn Guzheng with Mr. Lou Shuhua,who,with the purpose to improve his teaching,had transcribed a large number of ancient Guqin music and Silk and Bamboo music from South China,and based on the original system of notation and terminology, reformed the ″Guzheng finger technique″ which was specific for 'gong chi pu″ ?穴ancient music notation?雪,and also compiled ″21 Guzheng Etudes″ and ″Selected Works of Guzheng Music″. Cao Zheng benefited much in his early years of learning from Mr. Lou's teaching materials. One of the works that he learned is the ″Songs of Fishing Boat at Dusk″,which,being a landmark work in the history of Chinese Guzheng,makes the best use of Guzheng's plucking and pressing techniques as well as the combination of sound and melody,and breaks through the time and space limitation for the local style of this music piece,and thus makes the work popular among both the public and the music circle. In 1946,Cao Zheng compiled the ″Book of Guzheng″,the first simplified notation score book ever published in the field of the Guzheng art. The book gives a description of the origins of the instrument,its various playing techniques and music notations. In 1948,he founded,together with Fan Yuetian,Zheng Peixin,Liu Yulong,Mao Pengchun and Tong Yifeng,the ″Xun Feng Guzheng Society″,which facilitated the inheritance and development of the Guzheng art. In 1948,under the recommendation of Cheng Wujia,Cao Zheng was invited to become a Guzheng teacher in the faculty of traditinal music at the National Academy of Music. Since then,the ancient instrument Guzheng was offered a place for teaching in professinal art schools of higher education,and became one of the majors for music professionals. In August 1961,Cao Zheng initated and presided over the National Conference on Guzheng Teaching Materials″ in Xi'an,the first conference ever held in the Chinese history on the subject of Guzheng teaching materials. Rigth after the end of the conference,he wrote the Minutes of the Seminar on the Guzheng Teaching Materials,and finished his book ″How to Read Ancient Scores″. Cao Zheng recorded a large number of music pieces,such as the cassette tape for the national and local radio stations ″Thirteen-Stringed Instrument Solo Works over the Radio″,the recording of his solo pieces ″Songs of Fishing Boat at Dusk″,″Grand Mountains and Running Waters″ and ″In a World of Universal Brotherhood″,published by China Record Company. In 1952,his cooperation with Zhu Yuzhi on the duet ″Songs of Fishing Boat at Dusk″ for Guzheng and Erhu won the first prize of music composition in the province of Liaoning. After many years of learning and performing,Cao Zheng gradually formed his own style of playing. Cao Zheng lived a life so extraordinary that by having dedicated his whole life to the art of Guzheng,he laid the foundation for the modern Guzheng playing techniques and teaching sysytem,and made great contribution to the unprecedented prosperity of this art form. There are so many No. 1's in his life that we should remember,and so many things that each of the present Guzheng artists are benefiting from. Each of the steps in his artistic career proves that he is the pioneer,the authority and the great master of Guzheng.
