Acute cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury was produced by reversible middle artery occlusion without craniectomy in rats. Cyproheptadine (Cyp) 1.5 and 2 mg·kg -1 iv decreased the size of cerebral infarction after ischemia for 2 h followed by reperfusion for 3 h. Cyp (2 mg·kg -1 iv) improved brain electrical activity, increased the activity of superoxide dismutase, and decreased the content of malondialdehyde in brain. These results indicate that Cyp has protective effects against cerebral ischemia- reperfusion injury, probably through inhibiting free radical and subsequent lipid peroxidation.
