In constant volume bomb, the high speed photography was employed to observe the ignition and combustion process of methanol spray at different ambient temperature. The experimental results of methanol spray were contrasted with diesel one. As ambient temperatureincreased, tile penetration of methanol spray decreased and the spray cone angle increased.At the same temperature, methanol spray had less penetration and larger spray cone anglethan diesel spray. As ambient temperature increased, the ignition delay of methanol spraybecome short. But at the same temperature, methanol spray showed much longer ignitiondelay and more amount of pre-mixed combustion than diesel spray . The ignition point ofmethanol spray located on the middle part and the spray was not enveloped by the flame.After combustion started, methanol spray had larger spray volume volume and more amount of airentrainment than diesel spray. At high temperature,methanol spray had higher initial heatrelease rate and shorter combustion duration. Unlike diesel spray, there was almost no sootgenerated during combustion period in methanol spray.
