自１７世纪以来，北美洲开始采集野生西洋参并输出至亚洲。由于需求量不断增加，开始人工栽培，现已有１００多年的栽培历史。尤其在最近２０年，栽培量剧增，１９９４年美国威斯康星生产出２百万磅，加拿大也达到２百万磅。这对生产者及世界市场有重要影响。本文重点介绍当前西洋参的生产方法，人参工业概况，市场及未来潜力，文章预言未来的人参工业面临的巨大挑战。
Abstract North American ginseng(Panax quinquefolium L.) has been harvested in North America and exported to Asia since the 1700's.This early trade consisted of ginseng root harvested from the wild.Given the importance of ginseng in many of the traditional medical systems of Asia and its lucrative return,the demand for it increased.This eventually resulted in the development of a viable commercial production system.The production of commercially cultivated ginseng has been unddrtaken for approximately 100 years,Until recently,production increases were modest and most of the ginseng was easily incorporated into the Asian marketplace.However,over the past twenty years,production has substantially increased throughout North America,particularly in the traditional production areas.In 1994,the production in Wisconsin,U,S.A.,exceeded two million pounds(907,000 kilograms)and the production in Ontario,Canada,exceeded one and One-half million pounds(680,000kilograms).In British Columbia,Canada,the newest production region in North America,production exceeded one-half million pounds(227000 kilograms).With lanted areas and onfarm yields increasing,future expansion in total North American production will be realized.The nature of these increases and the implications for North American ginseng producers and the Asian marketplace will be significant.Coupled with this will be the implications of North American ginseng production in China and the role of the expanding value-added ginseng products industry around the globe.The future for the global ginseng industry will be determined by a plethora of complex international interactions with the results yielding both international winners and losers.
