Verses took up considerable space in marketplace novels of Ming and Qing Dynasties. Some of these verses reflected the function of poetic education, but the actual function of poetry does not lie in the advocacy of ethics. The verses which took up considerable space could not really be in harmony with the works; instead, they only existed outside the plots of the works and became decoration for the works. Some verses became symbols for the men of letters of that time to enter common society, and they still bore consciousness of fame. And some other verses only revealed their illusory dream of envying the great honor and wealth after the success of imperial examination. Men of letters ought to be the ones who carry on the Confucian traditions, but the vexes in the works demonstrated the assimilation of the unique life style and philosophy with the ordinary people. Their efforts and struggle can be promoted to be the nation's characters, but their retreat is the dross in the nation's characters that must be rejected.
