in this paper, the historical development of environmental geotechnical engineering is brieflyreviewed. The mechanical and chemical properties of various waste materials are described. Emphasis isgiven to mass transport which is generally considered as the important theoretical problem in environmentalgeotechnical engineering. The significance of legislation for geo-environment is also presented in this paper.In the last part, a simple outlook is presented for the 2lst century. Geo-environmental task along with severalresearch topics are suggested for the purpose of improving the living environment of mankind.
