Salinity data are common in the processes of hydrocarbon exploration and development, and generally, the data points are distributed irregularly within three-dimensional sedimentary rock bodies. The geologic information inhered was not able to be fully extracted because the methods usually used are confined to one or two dimensions. It is necessary to analyse three dimensionally distributed data by three dimensional methods and to display the results in three dimensions, in which three dimensional mapping is crucial. The technique established by Zhang Juming and Zhang Qirui (1988) can fully meet the requirements of the study. It is a computerizd technique, which can plot block contour map automatically.Salinity data from Wenliu area of Zhong Yuan Oil Field was collected and analysed by traditional methods as well as the new technique. It is not surprising that the information extracted by the 3-D method is much more satisfactory and inspiring than the usual ones. Therefore, it can be concluded that block contour mapping incorporated with 3-D trend surface analysis method is helpful in analysing salinity data from oil field. The conclusion achieved from the analysis of data from Wenliu area are as follows: (1) The salinity variation is mainly controlled by evaporites and the increasing tendency of salinity with depth does not exist, (2) In the southwest of the studied block, there is an impermeable horizon at about 3200 m and serves as seal for .deeper hydrocarbon trapping. (3) In the middle of southeast marginal area of the block, the dilution effect of meteoric water is serious and extended down to several thousand meters, therefore not beneficial for preservation of hydrocarbon.
