Smoothing reactor is one of key equipments in ± 500kV HVDC projects. Compared with oil-immersed smoothing reactors, dry type ones have lots of advantages, such as, maintenance free, low-noise, and easy to be designed, produced and transported at home. So, dry type smoothing reactor is a rather better choice for HVDC. However, it is relatively less applied in today's domestic HVDC projects. According to the transportation and manufacture capacity, the dry type smoothing reactor may be adopted in future 800kV UHVDC project. It is very important that the arrangement scheme of dry-type smoothing reactor in 800kV UHVDC project. Studying the principal parameters and system's requirements of the 800kV UHVDC project, some main data can be gotten. Also, based on the characteristics and operation experience of dry-type smoothing reactor, the relative technical economy comparison of advantages and disadvantages for the reactor' s indoor or outdoor arrangement schemes had been put forward. Working with several main domestic manufactures, parameters for dry type smoothing reactor, such as, size, weight, cost of auxiliary equipments, etc. , had been collected by their concept design and experience. These data shows that, there will be less equipment investment and more operating cost when indoor arrangement scheme is adopted. In all, comparing outdoor arrangement with indoor arrangement, hoth schemes are feasihle for ± 800kV UHVDC project. As for one specified project, there shall be different commendatory schemes for different manufactures. The arrangement scheme shall he made after taking into account the factors, such as, floor area, construction investment, operating cost, etc.
