Zhang Yimou made a typical decision to have Qin dynasty as the background of his martial art film of Hero, especially so within the framework of East-West competition and globalization. The rule of making martial art movies takes a long-term practical exploration and audience responses. Following traditional format of the film type, audiences normally have certain expectations. While Zhang Yimou, with his long film production experiences and vanguard sensibilities, basically deconstructed the format and transformed it into a commercial film type,in spite of the fact he still used martial art fighting scenes. Among its criticism, much came as a result of audience's disappointment at their failure to recognize the revised format, which was quite expected when individual elements met tradition. It is the price Zhang Yimou had to pay on his westward march towards a global market.
