The United States is both an actor and part of a system, here called the American imperium. China and Japan are placed firmly in the American imperium and are linked in different ways to the United States and the American imperium. Japan has adhered to a national economic and international security strategy. In contrast, China follows an international economic and national security strategy. Even though the balance of power between Japan and China is shifting, this political constellation keeps a porous Asia clearly anchored in the American imperium. In my opinion, Asia continues to be a porous region of enormous importance in the American imperium, and the intensifying rivalry between China and Japan is providing the basis for the United States to remain an important political actor in East Asia.
