OBJECTIVE.. To study the expressions and significance of α-catenin, α-catenin and E-cadherin in esophageal carcinoma. METHODS: The expressions of α-catenin, β-catenin and E-cadherin were detected by the immunohistochemical technique (S-P method) in 100 cases of esophageal carcinoma. RESULTS: The abnormal expression rates of α-cat, β-cat and E-cad were 48%, 51% and 57%, respectively. The expression of α-cat was correlated with infiltrative depth, lymphatic metastasis, the time of TNM and differentiation (u values were 2. 835, 2. 602, 2. 660 and 2. 893 respectively and P values were 0. 005, 0. 009, 0. 008 and 0. 004 respectively). The expression of β-cat was correlated with infiltrative depth, lymphatic metastasis, the time of TNM and differentiation (u values were 4. 566, 3. 095, 2. 484 and 3. 578 respectively and P values were 0. 000, 0. 002, 0. 013 and 0. 000 respectively). The expression of E-cad was correlated with infiltrative depth, lymphatic metastasis, the time of TNM and differ- entiation (u values were 2. 851, 3. 811, 2. 958 and 3. 130 respectively and P values were 0. 004, 0. 000, 0. 003 and 0. 002 respectively). The 5-year survival rate in cases of normal expression of α-cat, β-cat and E-cad were significantly higher than that in cases of abnormal expression (X^2 valus were 6.83, 5.34 and 13.39 respectively and P values were 0. 009, 0. 021 and 0. 000 respectively). The differences of expression among E-cad, a-cat and β-cat in esophageal carcinoma were not significant (X^2 values were 2.37 and 1.25 respectively and P values were 0. 130 and 0. 320 respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The abnormal expressions of α-cat, β-cat and E-cad are related to occurrence and development of esophageal carcinoma. They may serve as valuable indication for biological behavior and prognosis in esophageal carcinoma.
