Powershift range-change transmissions make it possible to increase of the number gear steps or the overall gear ratio without major design expenditure. The use of modern electronic systems has made it possible to develop a transmission concept which was previously impossible due to the immense number of procedures requiring adaptation to each other. To clarify questions regarding both the ability to master control systems and the resultant shift comfort level, a prototype was developed based on a production automatic transmission.Using theoretical analyses and simulation results, a new type of powershift procedure was developed. This procedure could be extended to include range-change powershift (RCPS). The procedure underwent functon tests both on test rigs and in test drives under all operating conditions.
