The studies of ideology, behavior and human landscape as well as their cross-fertilization in western human geography offer a new perspective and method for the study and protection of our non-material cultural heritage. The genesis and development of Wan-nan folk performance is closely connected with the folk belief, behavior and human landscape. The art of performance is in fact an integral part of folk religions, partaking in all kinds of sacrificial rituals and celebratory activities. It has formulated its unique form and style with its dependence on the geographical space and sites as well as its interaction and cross-fertilization with its human landscape, and therefore betrayed its internal link with folk ideology and belief. According to The Convention of Protection of Non-material Cultural Heritage, the protection and study of the art of Wan-nan folk performance should be put into its genetic context of human landscape, ritual space and ecological situation.
