Objective To explore the after effects of high +Gz exposure on lung function in humans. Methods Ninety-five fighter pilots served as subjects. Twenty-nine of them underwent +7 Gz centrifuge testing with anti-G suit and L-1 maneuver,40 of them underwent + 9 G. centrifuge testing with PBG in addition and 26 of them both +7 Gz and +9 Gz testing. The lung volume, the index of ventilation and diffusion function were measured one day before centrifuge testing and 12 - 65 minutes after testing. Results As compared with the results obtained before centrifuge testing, FEV1.0, V50 ,V25 and DLCO were significantly lowered after +7 Gz testing, showing that the diffusion function was reduced and small airways had low-graded obstruction. After +9 Gz testing these changes aggravated with lowering of vital capacity in addition, while the differences between lung function indexes after +7 Gz and +9 Gz exposures were non-significant. Conclusion High +Gz exposure may lead after-effect on lung function. The duration of the after-effect and its long-term influence on pulmonary function of pilots need further investigation.
