Objective: To explore the expression of heparanase(HPA) in cervical cancer tissues and the relationship between HPA and cell proliferation, angiogenesis and metastasis by examining HPA, Ki-67 and CD34 in cervical staining(S- P) was used to examine the expression of HPA, Ki-67 and CD34 in 67 paraffin - embedded cervical cancer specimens and 13 normal cervical specimens. The difference of HPA expression between the two groups was analysed by t test, the relationship between HPA and the clinicopathological features as well as the expression of Ki-67 and CD34 was analysed by χ^2 test. Results:HPA was not expressed in normal cervical tissues ( P = 0.000), but highly expressed in cervical cancer tissues (73% ,49/67). Expression of HPA significantly correlated with FIGO stage of cervical cancer ( P= 0.001),lymphatic metastasis ( P= 0.012), cell proliferation ( P = 0.000) and angiogenesis ( P = 0.000). Conclusions; HPA may play an important role in the development, invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis of cervical cancer, and have the significant relation with tumor cell proliferation. HPA may be a valuable marker of evaluating biological behavior of cervical cancer and an important target of the treatment.
