In type 1 diabetic patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing a kidney transplant, simultaneous islet cell or pancreas transplantation has a beneficial effect on kidney survival, Italian researchers report. Dr. Antonio Secchi said, ＂this is the first evidence that islet transplantation plays a protective role on the transplanted kidney. Thus protection leads to higher rate of the transplanted kidneys. These kidneys also show better function＂.
