Carbon nanotubes were first discovered in 1991 by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The structure of the carbon nanotube can be regarded as a hollow cylinder rolled up by a graphene sheet. This pure carbon-contained texture not only opens a new understanding on carbon materials but also brings a big impact to material science in nanometer scales. In this paper, we will briefly review the discovery and structural characteri-zation of the carbon nanotubes with a particular emphasis on the critical role of TEM, especially high-resolution electron microscopy in the studies. Synthesis, properties and potential applications will also be introduced.
