The laser surface modification, a new technology for surface-strengsheningof materials, is one of the most signifieant research areas at present time. Thisarticle summarizes the history and the present researching sitnation at home andabroad of the laser surface modiification.Detailed description is focused on cha-racteristics and application state of the varied laser surface modification methods.The widely practical prospect of the laser surface modification is pointed out.
