OBJECTIVE: To understand the developing status of recent study in exercise and immunity at home and abroad. DATA SOURCES: We searched in Medline for articles on exercise and immunity from January 1988 to December 2004 with the key words of "ex- ercise, immunity" in English. STUDY SELECTION: 1 001 pieces of literature were found altogether, These materials were examined for the first time and those related to exercise and immunity was selected. Relevant full texts were searched through abstracts. DATA EXTRACTION: About 13 pieces of literature concerning exercise and immunity were screened out such as cellular inanunity and cytokine, etc. from collected literature for reviews. DATA SYNTHESIS: The impact of exercise on immune function depended on the intensity and length of exercise, Moderate exercise had a beneficial regulating effect on immune function; but exercise with heavy intensity lasting for a long time and a long-term intensified exercise would lead to the immunosuppression of the body. The effect of exercise on lymphocytes showed in the changes of quantity and function. Different subtype natural killer cells were used in different type, exercise intensity and duration. Cytokines changed significantly in exercise, and its change was related with the type, intensity and duration of exercise, More immune substance had important effect on immune function in exercise. CONCLUSION: Exercise will impact lymphocyte and its subtype, nature killer cells, nature killer T-cells and cell factors. Heavy-load exercise will suppress the immunity of the cells and enhance humoral immunity, thus resulting in an imbalance of body immunity. Meanwhile, it is necessary to make a study of substance relevant to immunity so as to make clear the relationship between exercise and immunity.
