From both diachronic and synchronic viewpoints, this paper studies the functions of the prepositions "gel"(给) and "bei"(被) agent in passive sentences and thence divides the passive sentences into two categories: those of the "accept" type and those of the "give" type. It concludes that the usage of "gei"(给) to usher in the agent originated from the written Wu dialect in modern times. Since ancient time, "bei" (被) mean both "suffering misfortune" and "benefiting from".
