Abstract This paper discusses the following inverse problem: Problem MD. Given a set of distinct real numbers and n - 1 real numbers a1, a2,... , a[n/2], b1, b2, . .. b[n-1)/2], (where [x] denotes the greatest integer less than or equal to x). Construct a n x n Jacobi matrix J such that J has eigenvalues and where ei denotes the ith column of n×n identity matrix. The sufficient and necessary condition for the solubility of Problem MD is derived, and the algebraic expression of the solution is given if the solution exists.
