The paper examines some of the morphological and semantic features of the Mandarin aspect markers “le”(了) and “zhe”(着) from the perspectives of grammaticalization and language typology. Three tentative findings have been made: (1) The reason that Mandarin aspect markers “le” and “zhe” are non-obligatory lies in the fact that perfective and progressive aspects of Mandarin are non-obligatory categories; (2) “le” and “zhe” are neither affixes nor grammatical words, but a type of clitics; (3) Perfective and progressive aspects of Mandarin are grammatical categories with a low degree of grammaticalization.
