Human health in towns and cities is strongly dependent on the status of urban soils. Urban soils may be affected by industrial activities, traffic, agricultural practices, and waste disposal. Interest in trace elements in urban environments has rapidly increased as a consequence of the high levels of contamination measured in some cities, and the associated potential health risks. Concentrations of Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, As, Cr and Ni were measured in 108 topsoil samples collected from parks, residential areas and suburban agricuhural soils in the city of Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, China in order to assess the distribution of these heavy metals in the urban environment and identify possible sources of pollution, and other heavy element contents of the topsoils were determined to find out the controlling factors of heavy metal contents and their distribution. Mean contents of Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, As, Cr and Ni in topsoils in Zhangzhou City are 0.471, 0. 353, 75.9, 32.6, 106. 7, 6. 86, 29.7 and 12.8 mg/kg, respectively. Compared to the background values for soils in Fujian Province, Hg and Cd are the strongest enriched elements; Pb and Cu are moderately enriched elements; Zn and As are close to the background values; while Cr and Ni are lower than the background ones. Compared to soil environmental quality standards of China, Hg and Cd are the most seriously polluted elements in Zhangzhou City. And among the investigated soils, urban soils have the highest content of Hg, and vegetable soils have the highest content of Cd. Heavy metal contents in urban soils and vegetable soils reflect human impacts on soils. Statistic approaches (correlation matrix and cluster analysis) were adopted for identification of natural and anthropic influence on heavy metal contents. The results demonstrate that the distribution of Hg does not appear to be associated with any other elements, while S may be capturer for Hg; As, Cr and Ni are elements controlled by pedogenesis; Cd and Pb are elements disturbed by anthropic contributions; Cu is mainly controlled by pedogensis and Zn is closely association with Mn oxides in soils.
