This paper briefly summarizes the function and characteristics of the geographical information system （GIS）, discusses the necessity and possibility of the application of GIS in environmental impact assessment （EIA）, and introduces the current status of GIS in EIA at home and abroad, and emphatically discusses on the prospect of the application of GIS in the field of EIA.
